Grae looked away. “They wouldn’t if they knew what I did.”

“Do you think I wouldn’t?”

“Maybe.” Grae shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Then let me reassure you of something you should already know: This is a safe space. We can discuss anything and I’m not going to judge you, I’m not going to dismiss you, and I’m not going to abandon you. I am going to help you help yourself. You’ve made tremendous progress over the past few months, but you are never going to find the peace and stability you long for until you deal with why you withdrew from everyone who loved you and constructed a suit of armour to keep the world at bay. For a long time Marcus was the only one to find a way inside that armour, but now there are a lot of people who would like to rip it away so you can live a full life again. I’m asking you—is that what you want? Do you want to be rid of that armour that imprisons you more than it protects you?”

Grae didn’t answer. She was so tired. She had been tired for a long, long time. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, she summoned up her last vestiges of energy. “I do.”

Jo exhaled softly. “Good. Then let’s talk.”

Grae was silent for a long moment, then she took a deep breath. “My senior year in university. I’d been living in residence since I started. I told my parents I wanted the whole experience of being a student, but really I wanted the freedom.”

“Freedom?”

Grae shot Jo a shame-faced glance. “I wanted to be able to bring women back to my room.”

“That’s not unusual for students. They’re learning to live out from under their parents’ wings and frequently explore their sexuality.”

“Well, I kind of got carried away exploring. I didn’t do relationships, but the women I dated didn’t care. They weren’t into long-term relationships either, so it was all good. At least until Melissa came into my life.”

“And who was she?”

Grae dug her nails into the arms of the chair and struggled to suppress the rising panic. She hadn’t said Melissa’s name out loud in more than eight years. “She was just a kid, a freshman, who had the fucking misfortune to develop this massive crush on me.”
